After the magnificent season the Men’s Soccer team enjoyed last season along with three graduating seniors being drafted to the MLS, it would be hard to imagine that success being replicated. However, the beginning of this season has been looking very promising with three players, Steve Neumann, Brandon Allen, and Alex Muyl, all earning the Preseason Best XI Honors. Steve Neumann is also on the MAC Heisman Trophy Watch List. All of this recognition is very nice, but one of the best things was being ranked number 1 in the conference and number 2 in the nation.
Unfortunately, the Hoyas lost their season opener to Cal Berkeley, but they quickly recovered and now have an overall record of 6-2 most recently defeating the Princeton Tigers. The Alumni Game on Sunday September 22nd was one to see as it had all the marks of a great game. There were high and lows, suspense, stars, and the unlikely hero. The Tigers got on the board first, but the great trio of Neumann, Allen, and Muyl quickly responded with a goal. Later the Hoyas went up one goal courtesy of Allen right before the half. However, in the 76th minute of the game the Tigers scored once again. Luckily, the Hoyas had learned from their previous losses this season and kept their composure. The Hoyas’ Tyler Rudy was able to net one for the team in the 81st minute of the game and that was all she wrote!
Now the guys get a week to prepare for the Creighton Bluejays. The Bluejays are coming in ranked in the top 5 on most college soccer rankings. Homecoming weekend is upon us and there would be no better way to conclude it than by checking out the guys at 1pm on Shaw Field (North Kehoe). This will be a big time game and the Hoyas will need all the support they can get as they look to improve upon their record and ranking against a formidable opponent. HOYA SAXA!
