In a post-racist, post-sexist, post-classist world, what problems can we possibly have?!
- We can make Cheerios commercials starring interracial families without large protest.
- We can applaud women as they earn 100 cents for every dollar men earn.
- We can be a black male, live in New York, and succumb to being “stopped and frisked” only on rare occasions.
- We can bury the term “food desert”, as all Americans have access to healthy food in their respective communities.
Let’s snap back to reality. It is time we realize that we are not post anything. We have Post Offices, and Post cereal but that’s about as much post as we can handle apparently. Yet, we continue on this pursuit of happiness, our endless quest for our utopia. Unfortunately, the methods we use to convert this world into a paradise ask us to pretend, prematurely, that problems that stem from our differences no longer exist.
We are going to unearth these problems, bit by bit, recognizing the issues and replacing them with new resolutions and flowers. LOTS of flowers. We, at The Fire, hope these questions will cultivate deeper discussions over dinner and promote a common dialogue on diversity, equality, justice, and acceptance.
